This illustration portrays a family of tanukis (Japanese raccoon dogs) napping and playing in their secluded home, a magical old shrine buried deep in the woods. Unfortunately I never got to see any wild tanukis when I visited Japan, but the setting for my illustration was inspired by a beautiful shrine I saw on the island of Itsukushima.
